Hangover 11/30/09

Mon, 11/30/2009 - 11:17am by cjammet

This Monday's Hangover hold a special place in my heart, as it's the day after Staten CX. The race was a great success with great weather, fast racing, and tons of waffles and bacon.  People came out in droves and learned that yes, Staten Island can be a lovely place where you don't get mugged/hypothermia every time you go there!

As for results, I'll touch on the highlights: in the B Men's race, Alejandro Guzman pipped Kevin Molloy at the line in what was officially dubbed the SAND-BAGGIEST B Field in the world, Troy Kimball rounded out 3rd place.  FGX's Adam Duncan took 2nd place in the Masters 35+ field, and Matt Howard took 2rd in the singlespeed category, followed by Nat Kraxenberger from Sid's. My race on a tandem returned a remarkable 2nd place finish (out of 2 finishers), as I quickly learned that yes, it helps when both people can actually pedal.

The Elite Men's race was a ton of fun to watch, with Swiss national Valentin Scherz winning after clawing his way back from an early crash. Bill Elliston and Guy Nellison rounded out 2nd and 3rd. Full results will be up soon.

We also had a ton of photographers show up-  and we will post them as they become available.  here are some links from a few people already:

I'd like to thank everyone that was a part of yesterday's event:   our sponsors, the racers and the volunteers made this race happen!     more to come.

I think once you get lapped, you should get some scarlet letter to wear, or some orange safety vest. Or some other horrible bright outfit like an Adler jersey. Then it might be easier to score and make fun of the losers.

It's sad to see a promoter

It's sad to see a promoter take heat for something out of their control. To put it very bluntly, if we don't have promoters, we don't have races. It's a thankless (how many times have you thanked a promoter?) job, that doesn't pay much, if anything at all. Simply put, one promoter is probably worth at least 40-50 racers in a trade/barter system (and worth at least 60 cat 4 racers). Cherish your promoters, tell them thank you, and have a little perspective when things go wrong – if you won you will know it, and if you didn't there's always next week - unless you've pissed off everyone willing to promote a race, then there won't be any races at all.

SICX results fiasco
By: jkornbluh
Wed, 12/02/2009 - 10:01pm

SICX riders,

If your result is incorrect you can contact me directly, but there isn't much I can do unless you gather everyone from your field to discuss all placings. The scoring for all events, including the Elite field, was a mess and something we are still dealing with and the primary reason we just posted the results today. Riders who were lapped weren't properly scored, riders who DNF'd weren't listed as such, and some riders were left off of the results completely.

The only recourse we (and you) have is to use a private scoring company for any future events, which is exactly what will happen if SICX returns for a 3rd year. Since CX racing is very limited in NY/NJ, the local officials have less experience scoring races that require results for all riders, lapped or leaders. Most crits or circuit races will score the Top 15-25 and most riders won't care if their 58th place is left off of the books. But CX is a different beast - The season is short and riders want to track their results and get upgrades as quickly as possible, or just wish to see their crossresults.com ranking improve.

All I can say is that we are sorry our scorers failed to produce the proper results and we hope you won't hold this against SICX. We get the crew that USA Cycling provides and if they aren't able to properly score a race then we are forced to deal with a flooded email inbox of "suggestions" and "ways to improve for next year" from all of you, thanks to their shoddy scoring. If I sound bitter, I am. I'm only concerned with promoting and producing a high quality race for our riders and when the company I hire to score your results can't piece together a race with 25 people then I have failed to provide that product. Luckily, there are other scoring options that don't require the use of USA Cycling that cost just a fraction more, and this is something we are already looking into for our future events.

Thanks for understanding,

Jed Kornbluh

Hardcore Shit...
By: emtp563

I just got done editing photos fro the SS Open race. There is one guy who crashed on the barriers and tore off his seat. He finished the race on the same bike without a seat. At the finish, I have photos of his ass where he ripped his shorts NUMEROUS times from the seatpost coming into contact with his ass. There is actually blood coming from the rips/holes! That's some hardcore shit, man.

In the same race, CJ lost the chain on his tandem and finished the race with himself doing ALL the pedaling. Can you imagine trying to move your tandem partner, PLUS the weight of the tandem? Those fuckers are heavy! That's hardcore too.

I'm not done with the photos yet, but I will be tomorrow. Check my website then.

I think the protest had to do with a complaint about the 12 year old on the other tandem involved in some act of drive train sabotage.

Is it true that CJ attempted to protest the tandem results, accusing the other tandem cyclists of not maintaining a straight line in the last 300 meters of the sprint?

Yes, we had some issues with the results and will hope to have that corrected for any future events in 2010. Thankfully we were able to get most of them corrected and it seemed that everyone had a blast. Results will be posted online by tomorrow night at statencx.wordpress.com. As the race is now over (along with the protest period), all results are FINAL and will not be corrected.

Thanks again to everyone for all of your support.

Incorrect

Correction Nate Kraxberger racing for Sid's Bikes got 3rd in the SS Cx class. It took an hour to fix those results. They had a SS dude with a broken seat who got lapped twice in the top 5 until it was staightned out by some of the SS racers. Not sure what the officials where watching. Otherwise great event on a beutiful day!

Staten Island, the Molokai of NYC

Mon, 11/30/2009 - 12:07pm

Two older local ladies out for a stroll in the park/venue yesterday.

Lady one asks me, "What's going on?"

Lady two says, "What kind of race is this?"

I explain, "It's called cyclocross, a type of bike race that takes place on the grass and trails in the woods... etc."

Lady one,"Oh, are these all Islanders?"

Me, "Ah, what do you mean?"

Lady two, "Are they all Islanders, you know, from Staten Island?"

Me, "Oh, no, they are from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, NJ, PA, CT, even some from Maryland."

Lady one to Lady two, "Ohhhhhh, off Islanders!"

Lady two, "I thought they looked a little different."

BTW- Thanks for the awesome race guys!
