Profile: The first GS Mengoni team was run from 1981 to 1988. During those years, Alexi Grewal, Leonard “Harvey” Nitz, Wayne Stetina, Matt Eaton and a “who’s who” of the top U.S. riders rode in the Mengoni colors. They were the only team that could compete toe-to-toe with the powerful 7-Eleven cycling team. Other team riders included Steve Bauer, Mike McCarthy (U.S. Pro Criterium Championships, World Professional Pursuit Champion), George Hincapie, Kevin Monahan (2002 U.S. Professional Criterium Champion), Juan Pineda, Oscar Pineda, and Adam Myerson–all of whom became professionals after riding for Mengoni. The current team is NYC–based and competes throughout the northeast United States.

Highlights ’04: 14 victories, and numerous top placings in pro-am events. Victories include the stage-4 criterium of the Tour of Shenandoah, Bound Brook Criterium, New Britain Criterium, Dick Adamucci Road Race, Sweet Summer Classic, Tour de Lion, and Tour de Parc.

What to expect in ’05: Continuing a unified team based in NYC that tries very hard to win races, and often does.
