Hopeful Friday September 6, 2013

X is comin’ for ya…

Another Friday, and perhaps a chance to be hopeful. For something. Anything. Intern Josh here again, Dan is away on some kind of family outing. While away, he missed a team bonding excersise (read: drinkfest with some hugging and light petting, Jaime has especially soft hands as we discovered) and the opportunity to entertain you all so eff him. Here is what’s on tap this weekend if you feel like doing bike racing.

On Sat, there is the Hunter Mountain Fall Classic.

edit: and on Sat there is also the CRCA Team Cup finale.

On Sun, there is the Tour de Fort Lee, which will give you the ability to tell family and friends who don’t bike race that while you didn’t do the Tour de France this year, you did do a tour of some kind, albeit a much much shorter one (the job/family/pet monkey just got in the way of your trip to France, we know). Also on Sun, for those who feel like schlepping somewhere in a car really really really really early in the AM, there is the Blueberry Bicicletta Road Race in NJ.

And now for something completely similar:

There’s the Bucks County Classic on Saturday. Great race and great area. It’s NRC but has Stan’s, Champ Sys, and Foundation for local flavor. Starts in New Hope, ends in Doylestown which are both great places for day trips etc. There’s a viewing party with pig roast! I don’t love pumping a Eustice race but I love the area.

$60 for day of reg in the 1/2s. F that. Thanks Strictly for thinking that we are all as loaded as your NYC Tri customers

then sit at home on your fat ass in your hawaiian chair and write about it anonymously on a cycling blog/website. that’ll show ’em!

wrong. their odds are zero!

that’s because they’re doomed from the start. anyone who complains about reg fees without acknowledging or knowing the payouts means they know they’ll never win, let alone place.

they just want a cheap fee to go and race and be pack fill.

…if you care so much about the cost of the race. This race has more money than 80% of the races around here.

Posting anonymously is probably a good strategy, as I’m sure Strictly checks nyvelocity on a somewhat regular basis. Also, 29 pre reg for a crit close to the city? Mayhaps that is actually a sign that registration is a tad pricey, demand curve. Most are calling an end to season and when you see a steep entry fee that most likely doesn’t encourage you to slug it out for another race. Is Fort Lee on the same level as Harlem? No. So why charge more. Grants Tomb and Harlem both cost $40, that seems like a more reasonable fee. Increasing the place payout to 20th is a cheap way to justify a steep entry fee. When in reality I’m sure anything over 10th pays (or merchandise)very very little.

$2000 purse for the 1,2 race. They paid 20 deep. Merchandise for the top few as well. Eugene got a set of Zipp wheels and cash for winning the 45+. I think I saw a gopro on the prize list (placings) for the 1,2 race.

that said $50 is still an expensive entry fee.

Harlem is indeed done… there’s just no way that they’ll be able to race there next year with the reconfigured road around Marcus Garvey Park. Way too dangerous and narrow. The city DOT clearly gives zero fux about our little once a year event. I’m just glad I did the race when I had the chance.
