Hopeful Friday May 22, 2015

We are bike racers because we race bikes, however I am starting to be convinced that most of us race bikes not because we are bike racers, but because we like to dress up in funny cloths, spend large amounts of money on stupid things (like shoes/saddles/wheels/groupo’s with electronic “shifting”) and we need a justification for doing all of that. We can then go around telling people “well, you know, I needed to get those $400 shoes because I spend so much time on the bike because, well, you know, I race and all”. As I type this, a teammate has just sent me a race report complete with picture of him recovering in space boots. See? He really just wanted to wear space boots, but has to race to justify the purchase. Now, let’s talk about the plethora of events that are taking place to enable the rest of our silly consumer urges.

In the wee hours of “holy shit” on Sat, there is a CRCA club race with an Engineer’s gate finish. There is also the Robert Ollivierra Memorial Race Floyd Bennett Field at (you guessed it) FBF. You can tell the FBF n00bs by the guys who registered on bikereg. Sat also marks the beginning of the Killington Stage Race up in VT, so perhaps someone other than Weather Channel or Lupus will take the honors at the CRCA race. Out in NJ, there is the beginning of the Tour of Somerville with the John Basilone Raritan Cycling Classic.

On Sun, we have the Bound Brook Cycling Classic, again as part of the Tour of Somerville. In CT, there is the Cyclonauts Racers Criterium.

Since it’s a holiday weekend, Mon brings us the conclusion of KSR and the actual Tour of Somerville.

Mind the dogs, people…
