schmalz’s log week 14

Stop, seriously stop.

There are many people out there who are trying to inspire you. I am not one of them. In fact, since I compete directly against many of you in pretend bike races, I think I would prefer to un-inspire you. I hope to stand as an alternative to the inspirational quotes and black bordered gif images with mind blowing messages beneath them that clog your social media feeds. I am not here to tell you how special you are, or how you can achieve whatever you put your mind to. I am here to tell you that riding bikes is really hard, and that you should quit or maybe just ride a lot less than I do so I can be faster that you.

I’ve always felt that most people are really trying to inspire themselves when they post these quotes, we just happen to get caught in their good vibes crossfire. The messages posted seem to be primarily for self motivation, and we who happen to gaze upon these motivational morsels should consider ourselves lucky to be involved in their digital pep talk.

I on the other hand, am a petty person. I am inspired by spite, anger, fear and jealousy. These pathetic motivations are what get me out the door. I don’t simply want to be my best, I want my best to be better than your best. That means riding or training more than you. And inadvertently (or let’s be honest, via Strava) finding out that others may be riding or training more than me summons my Four Horseman of the Wrong Motivation Apocalypse to the fore. Hail spite! Huzzah anger! Praise fear! Another verb jealousy!

These motivations don’t make for social media appropriate gif material. It’s considered bad form to post images of Doge images that say "Andy got to ride for five hours today, I must now get out and CRUSH that jerk." No one wants to be labeled a de-motivator, but in my sad heart-of-pretend-bike-racer-heart, I don’t want anyone else to ride more than me. Because that means I have to ride more, and I have a lot of Bravo to watch.

So let me be blunt. Stop being so inspirational. It’s bumming me out. And if you are going away to straining camp, bite me, bite me very much.

Roman’s Beer Corner

This week I remembered to get a beer recommendation from Roman. This week’s selection is Founder’s Imperial Stout, which ships this week. Roman will surely be buying up a supply of this so he can unleash it upon unsuspecting guests later in the year.

How much paying attention can you do in the middle of the pack? There’s a reason there’s a pace car and that people aren’t supposed to be walking around behind the pace car and in front of the field.

If they needed a radio in the car they should have slowed down the car and the race until it was safe to let people go.

Froomestrong

Usually the pace car in need of a radio will speed ahead of the field giving it enough time to slow and stop. Maybe the pace car didn’t realize they were missing a radio.

Forget about the pace car. Who was on the lap cards, bull horn and at the table looking up the road? “Riders up”

what’s the story on Harlem? Can it still be run, now that the loop around Marcus Garvey Park has all been changed?

Caleb Ewan

Hi, my name is Caleb. Is anyone old enough to buy me a glass of champagne? I’m 19 and just podiumed at the TDU.

I feel bad for all parties involved here. I don’t really see how anyone other than the official is responsible for the accident. USAC insurance will pay out. End of case. This race is notoriously sketchy anyway for some reason. In the last lap of the P/1/2 race a couple people can’t seem to look up and caused crashes. If you can’t handle your bike go to the back, simple as that specifically the Toga guy who caused the crash in P/1/2 field at the last corner when the Bikereg rider was being swept up. This is the same rider that competed in the Mayor’s Cup last year.

If a racer rides into an official, it can be the racer’s fault if he had lost control of his bike or had his head down in a time trial position and wasn’t aware of where he was riding on the course.

Excellent post. I was checking constantly this blog
and I am impressed! Very useful info particularly the final section 🙂 I care for such
info much. I used to be seeking this particular information for a very long time.
Thanks and good luck.

I think you’re right as far as the unwritten rules of cycling are concerned. Ride with your head up, hold our line, pay attention. But I don’t think any of that will matter in a court. Beside, it was the Cat 5 field and the victim’s first race. So, head down and weaving is expected to an extent. We don’t know if he was pulling or if he maybe popped out of the paceline to come around another rider and hit the official. Who really knows? I hope this doesn’t affect the race itself, although I’m sure it will.

I hope they repair some of the pot holes before the 2014 edition. Otherwise, I think this race is a lot of fun.

you are so out of touch. that’s not what a doge image would say. it would say “such riding” “many hours” “wow” “must crush”. if you are going to include pop culture references, please do it right you grumpy old man…

Senne Steerer

What in the world do the lap cards have to do with a rider getting into an accident with an official on the race course? That is inconsequential!

Froomestrong

In a lot of the races I’ve done I don’t even remember being able to see the pace car. The report said the official was in the process of getting out of the way after picking up the radio. So, by the time the radio was thrown, bounced off the trunk, was picked up and the official was moving across the road that could easily have been enough time for the racers to come by.
